God Bless America
by Jerry Blassingame
America was founded on Christian principles. European immigrants who were looking for freedom and independence – freedom from oppression of a government and freedom to serve God openly.
So how did we get here in 2020?
How did we get to the place where a race group of people are oppressed and discriminated against because of the color of their skin? Who determined that white skin is better than dark skin? We all know that racism is taught. Babies are born with no knowledge of color or class. Racism is built into the fabric of America. Our founding fathers built this country with whiteness in mind. There were not any black people in position to speak up. Black people were considered less than human. The three-fifths compromise was a compromise reached among state delegates during the 1787 United States Constitutional Convention. So this is the method the founding fathers used to determine the states total population for legislative representation and taxing purposes. This population number was used to determine the number of seats that the states would have in the House of Representatives for the next ten years. This compromise was proposed by James Wilson and seconded by Charles Pinckney. James Wilson was from Pennsylvania and was appointed to the supreme court by George Washington. Charles Pinckney was a former South Carolina Governor and planter and was also a signer of the United States Constitution.
If we understand our history, we can figure out how we got here and undo this mess. If we follow the money, we can always figure out the problem. In order to get votes and keep power, we had to oppress the black people in this country. Jerry, that was 233 years ago. Black people have come a long way since then. Yes, but the power structure has not changed. America supported slavery and did it in God’s name by twisting scripture. “Slaves obey your masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord.” Colossians 3:22 NLT. The government started it, and the church supported it. Just as we all watched the murder of George Floyd, they all watched the oppression of a people even until today.
Here is something else to think about: During Reconstruction, from 1865-1877, there were more African Americans in Congress than any other time in history. The republican party was created to spur African Americans into politics in the south. There were more than 1500 officeholders in politics during this time. The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1865 and by 1870 had become a vehicle for white southern resistance to the republican party’s reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for black Americans. I’m sorry to report today that we have these racist views on both sides of the aisle.
This is our history America. Why have we continued to allow this? As long as we deny the real power of God, which is love, we will never move from this place. We must repent and turn to God. We are all made in His image and His likeness. We all came from one blood and we must all unite in this United States of America. The world is watching our leadership. We were given two things to do: Go into the world and make disciples (which is the great commission and the great commandment) and to Love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. If we do these, I believe we can turn this place around.
God Bless America!
